Canupawakpa Dakota Nation or Chanupa Wakpa (‘Pipestone River’, a pipe was found along the river in which the name originated) is a community that has a high level of Cultural and Language retention and has very strong ties to other neighboring Dakota Community’s.
With a population of over 300 people, Canupawakpa Dakota Nation is located in southwestern Manitoba, Canada, also known as Oak Lake Reserve.
Located along the #83 highway, The reserve is located on unceded territory of the Dakota People in Treaty 2. Canupawakpa Dakota Nation like all Dakota reserves in Canada, are not signatories to treaties in Canada.
Canupawakpa Dakota Nation has a gaming Centre with VLT’s and some convenience items. The communities Band Office is located centrally between the Health Services building and the VLT Gaming Centre.
A beautiful new Community Centre building was opened in the summer of 2021.
A New Gas Bar is currently under Development 2024.
